Back at Last!

Sad news as Reason showed signs of colic on Sunday morning and was quickly brought into the clinic. Unfortunately she was suffering from a small intestine or stomach colic and although we treated her with IV fluids, she had to be euthanised late at 2am on Monday morning. Colics that involve the small intestine or stomach are very painful and the hardest to treat with the most guarded prognosis. It's possible there was a stone or a growth as Reason coliced last year as well.

Our thoughts go out to Shiloh Family Member, Tanya, who had been leasing Reason. They made a perfect pair and were often see heading out on trail or hanging out together in the Mare Motel while Reason ate her extra feed. Thank you for loving Reason so much, Tanya, you helped to make her life better. You loved her, and we know that Reason loved you...

Journey enjoying her breakfast this morning...

Our new City Center shelter- look how awesome it is!

Sheriff, the Mule, enjoys the shade. It is so much cooler under there. The Wanderers are often seen hanging out here now...

The guys are painting it red to match the rest of the shelters.

The Big Pasture this morning.

It is so nice to return from our trip and see all of the horses again. Everyone looks great and Felipe, who was in charge, did a wonderful job. It's great to be home!

Welcome home, kids. Your ranch hands are super, that's for sure!

On another note- we don't know how to reach Tanya other than by the Shiloh blog- so here goes. We can't tell you how sorry you are for your loss of Reason. You gave her everything a girl could give a horse- love, kindness, joy, and the knowledge that your were 'her person.' That made her feel loved, safe, and special. Reason had all that joy in her life because of you- I'm so glad you were there for her in her final year. I haven't written about Chief since we lost him. He was so special to us all. The only way I can make sense of his loss is- we all do ok here. We have the best ranch hands, we have Jill, Tony, and Sally as our fearless leaders, and we have volunteers that were most certainly hand picked by St. Francis. Someone had to lead the Shiloh Heaven ranch, and my guess is that is Chief. I hope Chief was there to greet Reason at the Pearly Gates, and to usher her into the greener pastures of the Shiloh Heaven Ranch that she so deserves. Our thoughts are with you- you certainly can be proud of your time with Reason. Kelly & Dean Byrd

The "St. Francis Volunteers", I like that Kelly. It's so true, we really do have the best group of people in our Shiloh Family.

All of us work hard to give the animals at Shiloh the best quality of life we can. It's not easy, and it can break your heart at times, but it is all worth it.

Something that Sharil said really touched me. She said that her sister Christine, who recently passed away, always wanted to be around gentle horses. We like to think Chief, one of the kindest souls, gave her a ride up to the Greener Pastures so that she would not have to go alone...
