This Past Weekend...

Well, my flip video camara stopped working- it's full of new photos and it's dead. This is the 5th one in the last few years- I love the Flip but I am just so hard on it. I ordered another one which should be here in a few days, so bear with me for photos. I had lots of updated photos of the horses to add to the site, but I will have to take them again.

We moved the newest Fallon Feedlot horses out of Isolation and onto the rescue side of the ranch. They all look good and now we can start to really get to know them. Everyone is still gaining weight and will be getting their make overs.

Melvyn is doing great! He is still eating and very interested in everything. He whinnies every time we go into his stall or just call his name. What a sweet old guy he is and a true favorite to everyone.

Marc Rea, a three star Parelli instructor, came out to Shiloh on Saturday to give a clinic. Lots of our boarders and long time volunteers participated in it and everyone learned alot. The best part of these clinics are some of the rescue horses get lots and lots of hands on work and attention and our volunteers learn how to help these horses become more adoptable- it's a win-win situation for everyone! Dave Hickey did a fabulous job setting it all up- thanks Dave! Thanks also to Marc and to everyone who braved the rainy weather to come and learn!

Speaking of clinics- don't forget, we have Mustang Makeover participant, Joe Weitekamp, coming to Shiloh for a clinic on May 1st. Learn more about participating here.

Here are some photos from yesterday's activities:

Everyone gathered in the dry office to listen to Marc...

Even Shiloh was listening...

Marc demonstrated pressure points using Shiloh!
Everyone listened very closely...

Then it was outside for hands on work...

Looking good!

Over to one of the round pens...
Taco, the Burro, also listened in...

Marc used his mare as a demonstration.

Back over on the rescue side, our Farrier worked on Nevada's hooves while BB watched.

He wondered what Ranch Dog, Coby, was eating. The dogs LOVE the trimmed hooves!

Then it was time for BB's first hoof trim! He didn't like it too much at first, but finally settled down and acted like a big horse. That is Lindsey Loham behind him, she now loves to rest in their shelter.

The Bungalow Brat Pack kicked up their heels in the cold weather!

Traveler's Mexican Vacation

Well, as you probably already know, Tony brought us to Cabo San Lucas for Jill's 40th birthday. Of course, I was invited as it just wouldn't be a trip without me!

I tried to tell Jill that I was on vacation and didn't need to blog, but she insisted...

Tony took us to a beautiful hotel halfway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. As always, I immediately immersed myself into the culture...

Hola Amigos!

This is the Mexican flag, The Bandera Mexicana. The red, white and green colors are of the National Liberation Army of Mexico. The symbol in the center is an Aztec pictogram for what is now Mexico City. Aztec legend dictated that they should found their city where they saw an Eagle eating a snake. It's a cool flag!

This is the lobby of our hotel. The statue is of Angel's Wings- it is said that the Angels found Paradise here and didn't need their wings any longer...

The hotel from the beach. Isn't it cool?

This is the Sea of Cortes. The Girls were able to see whales breaching each day not far off shore! It is also known as the Vermilian Sea, and you can see why by the color...

We went into the small town of San Jose Del Cabo to do some shopping. This area was once a beautiful estuary which included a fresh water river and Spanish Galleons used to stop here to take on fresh water as they traveled from Acapulco to the Philippines. In 1587, Thomas of Cavendish, a British pirate, sacked the Spanish galleon, Santa Ana, and put 190 survivors ashore at the estuary. That prompted King Phillip II of Spain to protect Spanish shipping by sending soldiers and Jesuit missionaries to colonize Baja California. This is the spot where the first mission was established in 1730. This church, the Church of St. Joseph, which was built on the spot of the original mission.
Over the Church's entry, a tile mosaic shows Indians (the original inhabitants of the Baja Peninsula were called the Pericu), dragging Father Nicolas Tamaral to his death. It is was the Pericu's final act of rebellion after Tamaral established the original mission.

The interior of the Church. The banners read "Today is the time" and "Right Now is the favored time". The time for what, I wondered?

Anyway, we had a great trip- but now it is back to Vegas and back to work!

Traveler in Cabo San Lucas

While we have been gone...

Some photos from the past week at Shiloh...

One of the Ranch Cats. One of the many feral cats who we have adopted from our local feral cat society and who live out at Shiloh...

Over in the Bungalow area, Sherlock, the Curly colt, gets to know Wanderer Concho.

Wanderers Charlie and Concho like to hang out close to the young guys.

Patti and Michele work with Sherlock.

Lindsey Loham drinks from a puddle.
Some of the Shiloh youngsters in the Bungalows, left to right: Spice, Fancy, Sedona and Sherlock. Our young guys live and play together.

Our wandering Llama, Inca.

Tanya looking good in her de-lousing outfit. Some of the new feedlot guys have lice.

Success! Patti got a halter onto Sherlock. Great job guys!

Dave set up the new (but used) red corral panels onto the Barn. They match the roof. Notice Melvyn looking out of his stall...

The red panels look great! Hi Melvyn!

The Saloon pasture.

A view of the Hospice, Calamity is on the left, Cocktail on the right.

The Area 51 pasture eating their hay. That's Pecos, Chunky Monkey. Twerp, Amiga, Lovely, Shamrock's eyes and ears, Blahnik and Tioga (the Paint).

Apache- Vet UPDATE

Great news as Apache is passing manure normally and is feeling great and acting normal. Her colic treatment worked and she is ready to go home to Shiloh.

Super Job Apache and Desert Pines!
I haven't heard from the vet about Apache- but no news REALLY is good news. We already discussed her treatment with the vet and that it will take multiple tubings with oil and water over a few days to get things moving like they should. I will hear about her today and I will post an update...

Here is a very interesting article about our Wild Mustangs. What a mess the BLM has made.

I do have some great photos from Dave from this past weekend that I will post very soon- but I am trying to take advantage of my vacation to try to stay away from work if possible! :o)

Those of you who are on our Facebook, probably know that Sally and I are still on our Mexican vacation. Tony brought us to Cabo San Lucas for my 40th birthday. We will return home on Thursday. It's beautiful here and we are having a wonderful time!

Here is Sally hitting family members with a giant noodle...

My brother, Tom, Tony, my sister in law Kelly, my niece, Abbey, and my other sister in law Stephanie.
Guess who else came along. Traveler! I keep trying to get him to write his blog but...

He keeps insisting that he is on vacation as well!

Apache in the vet clinic...

Apache was taken into the clinic this morning. Yesterday evening she was showing some colic signs and was moved from her pasture and into a corral where she could be watched. She was treated with Banamine and seemed to settle down for the night. But, this morning she was uncomfortable again and we decided to send her in.

I just spoke to the vet and she does have a colon impaction in an area of the colon which narrows down and makes a sharp turn. (Horses have the weirdest digestive tracts!) She is being tubed with water and oil and will remain in the clinic.

Apache had this same exact colic last year, in the same spot.

I will update as I get more info...

Soot

Sad news as Sanctuary Horse, Soot, passed away in his pasture last night.

Soot was with us at Shiloh for two years, he was an old ranch gelding who was rescued from the Fallon, NV auction. He spent his days in the Okay Corral pasture with his best friend, Falcon.

Soot was happy and fat right up to the end and he lived a relaxing horse life for the last years of his life. We always hate to say good bye to our old friends, but we can be at peace with the ending of their Shiloh Journey, as we know they were loved and cared for on their twillight years.

Rest in peace, Sooty.

Busy!

Sally and I are still on vacation, we are having a great time but miss all the horses. Everyone is doing well at Shiloh. Melyvn is going strong, and everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather...

These photos were all taken last weekend, enjoy!

One of my favorites- look where the dogs wait to greet people on the weekends! They sit way up on the hay pile where they can see approaching cars from a long distance. Look how cool the valley floor looks behind them...

Derby greets a visitor...

Dave and Kody put the round pen back up after all the puddles dried up.

Charlie has some fun!

Michele and Patti spent some time with Sherlock...

Visitors and Nevada...

Sally and Daisy welcome a group of visitors...

Michele and Sherlock...

BB and meets his new adopter, Garry.

Garry has always owned Appaloosas and plans to use Natural Horsemanship training and Liberty work with BB...

Looks like a great match! They both have the same look on their faces!
