Summit of the Horse, January 5th

First off, we have pushed our February Fundraiser back to sometime this coming summer. The time was getting too tight and we have just had so much to deal with the past few months. We will let everyone know more once we have a better idea of a date.

Secondly, Sally and I will be attending a day of the United Horseman's Summit of the Horse to be held at the South Point Casino here in Las Vegas. We will be attending on January 5th. This Summit is a pro-slaughter summit where horse welfare, horse slaughter and Wild Horse issues will be discussed. We encourage anyone who is interested to attend as well. We feel that it is important to know the other side's issues and ideas in order to continue to push for an end to Horse Slaughter.

Shiloh's policy is to always be professional in our actions and to stay educated on all of the issues. Therefore, anyone who attends with Sally and I will be required to stay professional and calm and realize that your actions will speak louder than words.

Taco...

More sad news as one of our wandering Burros, Taco, had to be euthanised yesterday at the vet clinic. He suddenly began to show intense colic signs yesterday mid morning and Leo rushed him into the clinic. Upon examination, his condition was so bad that we had to make the quick decision to have him put down so that he would not continue to suffer.

A necropsy was performed which showed he had liver failure which had possibly caused a secondary infection which was affecting his intestinal tract. There was nothing we could have done and being a tough donkey, he did not show the signs until it was too late.

Sally and I thank the Hickey Family for meeting Leo and Taco at the clinic and for being there with him as he was put down. He passed very quickly.

We have had Taco for quite a few years and he enjoyed his time freely wandering the rescue's forty acres, leading the Burro herd and exploring the Mesquites. He had a very good Donkey life at Shiloh and he will be badly missed...

Taco was always getting into trouble- and if it didn't find him, he liked to seek it out. Here he gets "dramatic" on City Center...

Grazing by the Mesquites with his good friend, Margarita...

Getting after Donkey Otie!

And of course, his most favorite thing to do- going through the trash!

This has bee a difficult past six months for Shiloh, we have said good bye to many of our friends. But, with so many older and compromised animals living out their lives at Shiloh, saying good bye is part of what we do. All we can do is make sure they have a good quality of life, lots of stimulation and know kindness and compassion from all of us. And, like with a Burro like Taco, be able to appreciate the animals' unique brand of humor and enjoy their friendships while they last.

Rest in Peace, Friend.

Shiloh's Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through Shiloh's stable not a creature was stirring yet all were still able.

Their feedbags were hung on the fences with care, because Leo, Felipe, Diego and Junior were there.

The Horses were snuggled all snug in their beds while visions of Equine Senior danced in their heads.

While Jill and Sally visited the last frontier, the animals were cared for by our fine volunteers.

Suddenly, from above the pasture, there arose such a sound, the animals awoke and looked all around.

Away to the cherry pie, Mojo flew like a flash, with Aztec and Charlie right tight on his ass.

While the Vegas moon reflected off puddles far down below, Jill and Sally played in Alaska's fresh falling snow.

And what to the animals' wondering eyes would they see but Jimmy Dean in a sleigh pulled by eight of the Gummies!

With a fat pig so lively and quick, they wondered could he really be a swine dressed St. Nick?

More rapid than eagles, the Gummies they came, and he oinked and he squealed and called them by name:

"Now Melvyn, now Heavenly! Now Canyon and Seemore! On Sy, on Gomez, on Sunny and Vista! To the top of the office, to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!

And then in a twinkling, they heard on the roof, the pawing and prancing of each shod hoof. Aztec ducked his head and turned around as down City Center, Jimmy Dean came with a bound.

He was dressed all in faux fur from his snout to his butt, and his clothes were all tarnished with manure and mud. A bundle of carrots he had flung on his back and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes how they twinkled, his fat dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his snout like a cherry! His sweet little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the hair on his chin was as white as the snow.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly pig elf, and they laughed when they saw him in spite of themselves.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, he filled all the feedbags, then turned with a jerk, giving Daisy a pat on the nose, up to the roof of City Center he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to the Gummies gave a whistle, and they heard him exclaim as he raced out of sight, "Merry Christmas to Shiloh and to All a Good Night!"

Sarge's Shiloh Journey Has Ended

Sad news from Shiloh as one of our ranch dogs, Sarge, was euthanized at the vet clinic this afternoon. He had a very fast growing tumor under his tongue that was affecting his breathing, eating and swallowing.

Sarge orginally showed up at Shiloh one morning a few years ago. He had followed some riders out on a trail ride, and after becoming tired, he stopped at Shiloh for a few days rest before heading home. We welcomed him, put a hankerchief on him and invited him to stay. But, after a few days, he packed up and headed back to where he had come from. We said good bye and hoped we would see him again.

To our surprise and happiness, he returned one month later, this time to stay for good. We laughed and joked that he went home to get his "affairs" in order and let his owner know he was a-moving! He never left again.

Sarge was very old and stiffened with arthritis, but his heart was always young. He would meet us every morning at the gate- but we all knew he was really waiting to see Eric.

Eric and Sarge had a very strong bond, Eric even referred to Sarge as his "son". He would act like a puppy again when Eric was around and they would go on to enjoy many Shiloh adventures together. Our hearts go out to both Sarge and Eric.

Sarge lived a long and full life and we are so happy that his life's path crossed ours. He was a wonderful dog who will be badly missed.

Sarge's ashes will be spread at Shiloh- the place that he freely chose to live out his days.

Good boy, Sarge. Thank you for stopping by our ranch and our hearts. We love you.

Serenity

Sweet is the memory of distant friends! Like the mellow rays of the departing sun, it falls tenderly, yet sadly, on the heart.
~Washington Irving

Very sad news for me as my old mare, Serenity, passed away naturally last evening at Shiloh.

Serenity was in her 30's and I had owned her for 25 years. She was my first horse and I got her when I was only 14 years old.

Serenity was a pistol in her young days- when I first got her, she bucked me off every day- yes, every day. I had wanted a horse all my life and now I had one and I was terrified! My parents had unknowingly made the worst decision a new horse owner could- they bought me a 5 year old green broke mare. But, we didn't know any better and, hey, she was pretty!

After many hard landings in dirt, mud and arena railings, we finally smartened up and I began to take private lessons from a wonderful horsewoman, Daina Brumfield. She helped me gain my confidence and I began to enjoy finally owning my own horse! After a while, no matter how she tried, Renny could no longer get me off. Renny gave me a crash course (literally) in riding and I have never looked back since. Nowadays, I always tell people who are looking to adopt a Shiloh Horse, "don't do as I did- start of with an older horse!" Renny's story has, and will, continue to influence the way I place horses into adoptive homes.

Over the years, Renny and I jumped, showed and trail rode all over the West. We did a little of everything and she was the most amazing horse. She taught countless Pony Clubbers how to ride and I took, and passed, my "A" rating on her. But always, even after packing my young brother around a jumping course, when I would hop on her, she would always begin to play around and remind me of our bronco days. It was a fun thing we did and I think she was be smiling as much as I was.

Renny lived out her final years in comfort at Shiloh. Seven years ago, she was diagnosed with Cushings Disease and would periodically battle bouts of Laminitis, but overall she stayed happy and upbeat to her last day. While she had a protective barn stall to live, she loved to just be let loose to wander and explore the ranch. She moved much slower now and her legs were wobbily, but to me, she was still that young, glossy mare who loved to get out and go.

Renny is buried at Shiloh out in one of our pastures. She lays next to my other two older horses who also passed away of old age at Shiloh, Hollywood and Austral.

Rest easy and in peace old friend. One day, we will be together again and I may even let you buck me off again for old times sake...

Renny last week, hanging out in the Barn aisle with her pals, Sunny and Gomez...

Renny and Sunny. Both crippled up with the infirmaties of old age-but still young at heart.

Breakfast in the Pig Palace...

And in the Bungalows...

Up in Isolation, Dr Schur was out again to scope the horses who came back as positive for Strep (Strangles). Those who still had evidence of Strep, and who might be carriers, had antibiotic gel put into their guttural pouches (in their throats) and were put onto a long acting antibiotic. Hopefully, this will clear it all up once and for all.

Ed kept his little dog, Bones, warm...
