Monday's Adventures...

A gorgeous day today. All is quiet and all the horses are doing great.

Echo Echo, who suffers from advanced Founder, returned from the vet clinic today where he had been x-rayed and his hooves carefully trimmed by both Farrier and Vet. He is actually doing pretty well right now so the decision was made not to proceed with a more experimental procedure. But, he will need to go into the clinic every 6-8 weeks for x-rays and a trim using the x-rays. I will have some photos of Echo Echo in tomorrow's blog...

Sitka wandered on the Cherry Pie grass...

Look how round pregnant Pippi Longstockings is getting!

This is Heavenly and Raz in the Gummies (that is Eureka's back behind them)...

Sally removed Elisa's stitches. We do a little bit of everything at Shiloh!

Ironically, afterwards, Elisa rode Stitch. :o)

Lobo, the 3 year old Paint. Well, it's obvious now that he is not a gelding. When he arrived at Shiloh from the feedlot, it was not obvious that he was a stud (this can be due to stress and poor health). We figured he probably was not gelded (why would he be, right?), but it wasn't until his testicles descended that we knew for sure. He is scheduled for Brain Surgery (castration) on March 31st. After that, he will begin some light work and his adoption evaluation can begin...

Over on City Center, Sandi gave Sanctuary horse, Canyon, a nice bath. Canyon is the dirtiest horse at Shiloh- she loves to just lay in the mud!
Sandi put her into the round pen after her bath- and Canyon immediately rolled and is, again, completely covered in mud...

Taking advantage of the warm weather, Elisa gave Cocktail a bath...

And Sally gave Melvyn one. Melvyn is doing great- but as his winter coat begins to shed out, he has developed some sort of skin condition, which looks suspiciously like Mange. His hair is falling out in clumps and he is super itchy. We don't normally have Mange and Lice in our climate (it's too dry), but Melvyn came from the crowded feedlot in northern NV. So, we are treating him with medicated shampoos and Ivermectin. If he still has it by Vet Day, he will have a skin sample taken. Poor Melvyn- but he loves his baths and all of the scrubbing that goes along with them!
But, otherwise, Melvyn is doing wonderfully. He has really filled out and gained weight and spirit. Here he is drying in the sun after his morning bath...
Here he is the day he arrived at Shiloh a month and a half ago. Look at his facial expression and body posture in both photos- that says it all...

Tanya worked on shedding out Ketchum, who has the longest hair of any horse at Shiloh!

If Melvin is mostly losing his hair around his belly and tail, it could be sweet itch. A terrible allergy to nats and no-seeums etc. It isn't flys, just those little pesky things that come out in the evening and early morning. Once they get it, it is a nightmare to take care of. All you can do is manage it. Look up sweet itch on the internet, there is tons of info on it. If that is what it is, I can give you some ideas for good products to use. Can you tell I have had experience with this stuff?
