A Beautiful Day...

It was just beautiful out at Shiloh today, all the animals were great and it was warm and peaceful...

Blessing is doing great and will return to Shiloh tomorrow morning. This morning as we went to hook up to the trailer, we noticed a flat tire. Huge Thanks to Dave who fixed all of our flats! Yay Dave!

More good news, The Humane Society of the United States has chosen Shiloh to participate in the Parelli Celebration in Reno this coming May! A Shiloh horse will be chosen to be used in the clinic with Pat and Linda Parelli! More info as we get closer...

Here are some pics from the day:

Image, Kelso, Marilyn, and America have some "breakie"...

Daisy and Jimmy Dean had a stand-off...

Charlie checked out all of the girls in the turn out. (Cedar, Inspirada, and Apache...)

We are trying a new system to cut down on some of the daily work. We are trying to feed the big hay bales, this will help save work during feeding. The horses will eat these bales down over a day or two. Yes, we actually do go through a big bale in each pasture in a day or two (we like to free feed)!

The same bale, two days later. It's gone and the horses are full!

Tommy having some fun. He will leave for his new home this next weekend...

Falcon and Soot stand still for their photo...

Jimmy Dean enjoys some of the produce from Trader Jo's. Thanks to everyone who offered to help with that, Tanya who lives right near TJ comes to Shiloh a few days a week is picking it up and bringing it out to the rescue. Thanks Tanya!

Thursday

I just wanted to let you all know that Shiloh received an incredible donation from Kirk Kerkorian's Lincy Foundation. Kirk, a friend of Jill and Tony's and an incredibly generous man, called up out of the blue and told us about his donation idea. He had horses growing up and loves them and wanted to do something to help horses in need. His generosity has relieved a huge burden off of our precious resources for 2009, which will allow us to save many more horses this coming year. See other Foundations/Companies who have donated to Shiloh.

Well, today started off normally, it was beautiful out at the ranch and all looked great. Then we noticed Blessing acting a bit weird. She was acting a little colicy two weeks ago and we treated her at Shiloh and she made a fast recovery. But today she was doing the same thing again, laying quietly, getting up and then going down again. So, because of her advanced age (approx 26 years), we gave her a dose of Banamine and took her into town to meet the vet. It looks like the long trailer ride helped her out, as she stepped off the trailer feeling fine. Dr. Dorenkamp did an rectal exam and checked her out, but she looked normal. He went ahead and tubed her with oil and water just to be safe. Blessing will stay in town tonight and go back out to Shiloh in the morning.

Again, never make plans for the day if you do rescue!

Checking Blessing at Shiloh...

Dr. Dorenkamp examines her...

Blessing gets tubed...

Snug in her corral, feeling better and drinking water.

More news as adopted horse, Cedar, returned to Shiloh today due to financial difficulties in her adoptive home. Cedar was really well loved and cared for and looks great. It was difficult for her adopter to bring her back, but she knows we will work hard to find her another good home.

Cedar got loose by opening her corral gate and had a great time running around the ranch. Sharil leads her back...

More from Tuesday...

As sad as the vet day was for us, life goes on at Shiloh...

This is Ketchum, a wonderful Appy gelding who returned to Shiloh yesterday. He was adopted three years ago, but his owner could no longer pay his board bill so we took him back. Once we re-evaluate him, ketchum will be looking for his new home.

Area 51 eating...

New best friends, Sunday and Lucero in the Bungalows...

Sally shows off one of our bent and broken manure forks. As you can imagine, Shiloh is very hard on manure forks!

Big Vacation Village...

Jimmy Dean is now able to wander freely when we are at the ranch. He acts just like a dog and comes when you call him! He is too cute!

Lucero eating hay with her mom, Amiga...

More from Tuesday's vet day:
The vet sedates Sanctuary horse, Timber. Due to his old pelvis fracture (it is healed and fused), he cannot hold up his feet for trims. So we had him laid down and then trimmed.

Working on his feet...

The dogs love to eat the hoof trimmings!

We also had the vet check on Charity, who is still doing well and getting around. She gave Serenity a Legend shot for her joints, She performed a pregnancy check on adopted horse, Gladys Noche. We just wanted to confirm that she was not pregnant, you just never know when they come from auction. Luckily, she is not pregnant. Dr. Schur than went on to work on many of the boarded horses, doing teeth floating, check ups, etc.

More good news- Empire is being adopted by Jessica of Las Vegas, Six is being adopted by Allison of Las Vegas, Elvis' adoption is going through, and Charmin was happily adopted to Shiloh supporter and volunteer, Robin. Great homes for these nice horses- yay!

Shiloh will be attending the Fallon, NV auction on Feb 21st to rescue more horses. Please consider donating to our Slaughter Fund. One hundred percent of these donations go directly to paying our auction bill. We are hoping to save possibly up to eight horses.

A Sad Vet Day

Some sad news from our vet day...

First off, one of our older Sanctuary horses, Pioneer has been acting a bit weird for the last two days. Not anything specific, but laying quietly and not very interested in food. We had Dr. Schur check him out this morning first thing. Upon doing a rectal, she felt a large impaction in his large colon area. The weird thing is that he was so stoic and showed no colic signs at all. We went ahead and had him tubed with water and oil. As we were standing there as she finished up, he suddenly started to shake and pant, it was obvious that something very bad had just happened. Dr. Schur thought that he had ruptured his intestine right there in front of us, and because of his great pain, we had to have him euthanised immediately. He was put down with all of us talking to him and he passed quickly. Afterwards, we went ahead and had Dr. Schur open him up to see just what had happened and we found that his cecum had ruptured. Thankfully all of this occurred with Dr. Schur standing right there, otherwise, if he had ruptured at night for example, he would have died in incredible pain and stress. It was very sad for us as Pioneer had been with us for about three years and was well known at the rescue.

Sadly, we had to have another Sanctuary horse euthanised as well. Fremont had an advanced neurological condition that made him very uncoordinated and unsteady. It has progressed over the years that he has been with us at Shiloh, and had gotten to the point where he was falling down and injuring himself. He had become a danger to himself, his herd mates, and to people. We could no longer have his feet trimmed, the last time he had to be laid out by the vet and he had a very hard time getting up afterwards. We just could not let him suffer like that anymore and we were afraid that he would possibly break a leg and then be in even worse pain. He was put to sleep in his pasture where he lived while we comforted and talked to him and he passed away very quickly.

Losing these two horses made it a difficult day. In rescue, hard decision have to be made, and it just doesn't get any easier.

Saturday

Another busy day at the ranch.

Daisy greets some visitors...

Everyone pitched in to move the boarders' tack rooms to the other side of the ranch. They are now located behind the office area in a more central location so the Boarders can stay in the middle of all the action!

Peanut, the ankle biter, had to wear her muzzle...

Look how sad she looks, but it's better than her leaving a trail of bloodied shins in her wake!

Stretch and the blind girls get some carrots...

Sabine rode Larceny...

Tonya rode Reason, they look great together.

Pal got groomed by a volunteer...

Sitka.

NASDAQ.

Mendoza and Vista eating in the Gummie Pen...

Arson getting his foot flushed and re-wrapped...

His foot is healing very well...

Moving the tack sheds...
It's going to look great when it is finished...

Later that night...

Sally hanging out with Tom Jones backstage after we went to see his show...

Sally and Tom- go Sally! Tom Jones puts on an outstanding show at the MGM here in Las Vegas, we always go to it whenever he is in town and we highly recommend it!

Abuelo

Some sad news today as kind old Abuelo passed away sometime late last night. He was found early this morning in his Assisted Living pasture. There was absolutely no sign of a struggle and it looks like he just passed away. Abuelo, who was 30+ years of age, was only at Shiloh for a month, but we know that his last few weeks were very good for him. He did great in the Assisted Living herd, loved his daily Equine Senior, and wore a nice warm blanket. He seemed very happy, relaxed, and content. We are very happy that we had him at Shiloh for the time we did. He deserved a quiet and safe place to live the remainder of his days. Rest in Peace, Abuelo.

Abuelo getting drink last week...
Daria welcomed and comforted him on the day he arrived at Shiloh...

Robin spent time with him when he arrived to help him settle in...

Some happy news as Tommy Haflinger has an adoption pending to the Pache family of CA where he will join another former Shiloh horse, Blackjack, in his new home. Here is a message for his new young owner, "Happy Birthday Aubrie, Love you always Grandma Jane." This is the perfect home for Tommy where he will become a Pony Club mount for Aubrie, we couldn't ask for a better family for him to go to...

A little help?

Thanks to a generous Shiloh supporter, the Trader Joes Store on Washington and Buffalo will be donating their day's old produce to the Shiloh Animals! They would like the produce to be picked up twice a week if possible- a great thing for all the pigs and goats!

Now, here is the problem, we need someone to pick up the produce at least once, or even twice a week at Trader Joes. If it could even be brought from the store to the south side of the valley, like to Wakimoto Feed on South Las Vegas Blvd, we could pick it up from there.

Please email Sally at svberg@cox.net if you can help!

Back to work...

Sally and I were back out at Shiloh today after our Los Angeles trip, it was nice to be back and see all of the animals... It was a beuatiful day out there! Big thanks to everyone who kept the rescue running smoothly while we were gone!

Here are just a few shots from today. :o)

Gummie Pen member, Orlando, looking great...

Navajo's blanket had some problems, we switched it for another...
Jill found a new way to get Jimmy Dean out of his stall, he walks on the leash behind the golf cart. He travled all over the rescue today and helped with the chores. He was exhausted by the time we were done. He just still too small to be let loose to roam...

Los Angeles 1/17/09

First off, some great news as Elvis left for his prospective adoptive home. He did wonderfully with his new family and it looked like a great match for this super cute pony gelding...
__________________________________________________
Traveler was off to Los Angeles with Tony, Jill and Sally for a weekend at the Magic Castle and for a book signing in the Valley...
The World Famous Magic Castle- place of mystery and magic! I hope they know I am coming...
I worked hard on Saturday afternoon to set up Tony's artwork for his signing and memorabilia sale. I think I did a great job!

I set up his books for the book signing... Over the evening, I almost sold out of the books!

Here are some of his posters, they look awesome!

I have to say, I really do have a good eye for this kind of thing...

One of TC's Houdini posters! I sold a whole bunch of these...

His new giclees- thanks to my hard work, Tony sold three of them during this event!

Later I stopped by Tony's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame... Move away people, I know this guy! Don't step on this star!!!

Jean Harlow's hand and foot prints at Grauman's Chinese Theater! She must have been tiny!

Marilyn Monroe!

Tonight we have a screening of Tony's movie, Houdini at the Castle. I can't wait! I hope Tony will introduce me from the audience...

Don't worry peeps, I am a professional, I won't let Hollywood go to my head.
