Mendoza's Shiloh Journey...

Sad news from Shiloh today as another one of our old timers has passed on. Sweet old Mendoza, one of our Gummies, passed peacefully this morning while being comforted by Shiloh volunteer, Helga.

Mendoza was rescued in May of 2008 from an auction in CA. He was in bad shape at the sale and we rescued him to give him a comfortable place to live out his days. Dozie only had two teeth in the back of his mouth and was given regular steroid injections by our vet to keep his appetite and energy levels up. He responded so well that he was able to move out into the Gummies, where he enjoyed a great horse life, eating, napping and hanging out with his friends. About three weeks ago, we pulled him back in and put him into a barn stall as he was once again losing weight and his appetite had slowed. It was obvious that his body just wasn't functioning as well as it had been, he was not in any pain, he was just rapidly slowing down. Every day his appetite was a little less even though he had three buckets of different feeds, like Equine Senior, in front of him at all times.

This morning, he was feeling weak and he laid down and just never tried to get back up. Helga and Felipe made him comfortable in his stall, sprayed him with fly spray and sponged him with cool water. Helga sat down with him and talked to him and he sighed and quietly and peacefully slipped away as she pet him.

Dozie was a shiloh favorite and he will be badly missed. But what a great two years he had and what a peaceful way to end his journey. For that we can be happy as we mourn the passing of a gentle friend.
