Cold Days...

It has been very cold at the rescue over the past few days.

Some sad news from the ranch as Sally's horse, Sage, was euthanized in the vet clinic yesterday morning. Sage had suffered some sort of mystery injury and lameness in her pastern area and was in the clinic this whole past weekend for treatment when she developed a bad case of colic secondary to her severe lameness. Sadly, Sally had to make the difficult decision to have Sage put down in the clinic. Sage is buried at Shiloh under Mesquite trees. Our thoughts are with Sally and Sage at this time.

More sad news as Sanctuary horse, Whiskey, passed away yesterday in the Gummies. Whiskey was well into his thirties and had been at Shiloh for many years. It was his time and he had enjoyed a good and long horse life at Shiloh. Whiskey is also buried at Shiloh...

On to some photos from Saturday and Sunday:

Indy, one of the geldings who was found dumped in the desert not far from Shiloh, is starting to fill out...

Dave, Ed and Todd have been working on the Cherry Pie's bathroom. Here Dave takes a much needed break...

They had to repair the toilet as well as the sink. Here is Ed working hard...

Dave and Ed put up the insulation and drywall this morning and were able to hook the toilet back up. Thank you guys!

A very Cold Friday

A very cold day today at the ranch. But, so far there are not any emergencies and all is quiet.

Lots of horses laying down and soaking up the sun. On cold days like this it isn't unusual to look out across the pastures and see lots of the horses laying out flat.

Shiloh Visits the Anthem Pet Club in Henderson

On weds the Shiloh team visited the Anthem Seniors' Pet Club in Henderson, NV.

This time Florecita came along as well as Mojo. Flora can be a bit rambunctious at times, so we were prepared to be a little bit wary with her around
the people and dogs- but we were all very pleasantly surprised! She stood very quietly, sniffed noses with the curious dogs and took her photo with many of the seniors. She showed excellent manners! Huge thanks to everyone, especially Robin, who put in extra time handling her and getting her ready for visits just like this one.

Big thanks to the volunteers who came to the event yesterday too- Sandi, Ed, Sam and Gina- we couldn't have done it without you. Thank you for braving the cold to help us!

And here comes the Pet Club!

The dogs were dressed in their finest for the occasion...

Indy and Muncie- two abandoned horses find safety at Shiloh

Yesterday, we had two new unexpected arrivals to the rescue.

It is a long and complicated story. On his way to pick up a load of hay cubes, Diego passed a truck and trailer hauling two horses along the dirt road. Diego arrived at the hay farm and was getting loaded up when the same truck and trailer pulled in- this time WITHOUT the two horses. He immediately called Shiloh and and Shiloh crew jumped in the truck and headed out to confront the driver.

Of course, he denied that the horses were his and that he had dumped them, even though all of the evidence pointed to the contrary.

The Shiloh crew took photos and information from the driver as we will be contacting Animal Control.

After the confrontation, Shiloh loaded up the two horses, both geldings, and took them back to the rescue and safety.

Out in the desert...

This is Muncie...

Indy.

(I am currently in Indiana and Michigan and learned about these two guys when I was leaving Indianapolis and driving through Muncie, IN heading to Michigan.)

Shiloh Visits Silver Sky Assisted Living Facilty

Huge thanks to Robin who arranged for Shiloh to visit the Silver Sky Assisted Living Facility in Summerlin last week!

We love visiting out in the community and Shiloh Mini Ambassadors Mojo and Baja were on their very best behavior.

We all really enjoyed ourselves and many residents later said that Mojo and Baja were their favorite visitors that they have had!

Daria and her grandma who is a resident of Silver Sky...

Baja got right to work charming her new friends...

Some of the residents had horses at one point in their life and seeing the little guys really brought back wonderful memories...

Mojo was a hit, as usual!

And even shared kisses with residents!

Some even took some time to do a little grooming...

People happily crowded around to get a chance to meet the horses...

And even feed some treats...

These two horses may be small but their presence really made a big impact...

We are very fortunate that we are able to share Mojo and Baja with these wonderful people...

They brought a smile to everyone's faces...

An awesome visit! Thank you Silver Sky!

A Stop at El Morro National Site

In our way home to Las Vegas from Colorado, we stopped at El Morro National Monument in New Mexico.

Spanish explorers called it "El Morro" meaning "The Headland". Later American settlers called it Inscription Rock.

El Morro was a visual landmark on the wagon trails and was a place where water was readily available. It became known as a safe camping ground for settlers and explorers.

Settlers and explorers carved their names into El Morro, alongside ancient petroglyphs.

The earliest dated inscription is from 1603, four years before Jamestown!

There is a deep pool of water at it's base- this is what drew people to the rocks...

This inscription was left by "Peachy" Breckinridge in 1857. Peachy was a soldier from Virginia who passed through the area with his regiment. He later returned to VA and was killed in 1863 in a battle of the Civil War.

The row of inscriptions on the bottom of this photo are ancient petroglyphs. The inscription above is from two Spanish Colonists to the New Mexico Territory who came to the territory in 1598. They left their inscription on El Morro in 1636. Unfortunately for them, they were implicated in a plot to assassinate the Colonial Governor and were beheaded in Santa Fe's plaza in 1643.

More petroglyphs...

Inscriptions from railroad workers from the 1890's.

El Morro is a very interesting and very historic place! If you are ever close by Gallup, NM don't miss it!
