Well, I ruined ANOTHER flip video camera- when will I learn that I should not keep them in my back pocket and then sit down or drop them into a freezing mud puddle? So, today, I could take pictures but could not see the screen! I had to get another camera (my X-mas present) and will take more pictures tomorrow. Working outside at the rescue and electronic equipment just don't go together. I can't even have a cool phone, they just get wrecked- my phone I carry now is water resistant, dust resistant, drop resistant, bulky and just plain ugly... Oh well, it works. :o)

Shiloh has three new arrivals who will be coming to the rescue around December 29th or so from the Reno, NV area. They are three senior horses who were in real danger of being shipped up to the Fallon auction. These three old guys needed a safe home to live out their days. Thanks to Jill at Return to Freedom, Shiloh can help out. We will post more about these three once they arrive.

Great news as Moonshine has an adoption pending!

Sunday was adopted by the Hickey Family, where he joins former Shiloh horses, Rookie and Numerous! Sunday was a surprise Christmas gift to Deonna. This is a WONDERFUL home for this sweet little guy. Of course, Sunday will remain with his mom, Sitka, until he is weaned at 6 months of age.

The Levi Company Makes a Donation to the Shiloh Horses!

With HUGE thanks to Volunteers and Shiloh Supporters, Sandi and John, the Levi Company, as in Levi clothing, donated 10 custom truck backs to Shiloh! These truck backs were used in a Levi Clothing display here in Las Vegas, but were no longer needed. John learned about this and asked Levi if they would donate them. With John and Sandi's urging and persuasion, Levi's not only agreed to donate the truck backs, but they also donated the heavy equipment, semi trucks, and manpower to deliver and set them up at the rescue!


These ten "buildings' have already changed Shiloh's landscape. We are configuring them to create a bunkhouse, an adoption center and classroom, a Shiloh store, and best of all a medical area for horses who need more intensive care. Using 5 of the buildings, we are setting up three medical corral areas with run ins, and a larger closed in "stall" which can be used for a vet care area, a Farrier area, and where we can eventually hang up a sling when needed.

On top of that, Shiloh has also received a $5,000.00 Grant from the ASPCA to outfit and set up this Medical Area!

We are all very excited about this new project and the horses that we will be able to help in the future.

Of course, nothing is ever smooth sailing- while trying to move in part of the Store, the forklift got stuck in the mud created by all of the snow!

Our neighbor, Harold, donated the use of his huge tractor to pull the fork lift out. Look how wet the Mare Motel corrals were from the snow and water run off. The store building is still stuck and will have to remain where it is for a few days until the ground dries up a bit. Then , it will be moved into position and the Mare Motel put back together.

A Snowy Weds!

Well, it was very cold out at the ranch this morning, by noon the snow had begun to fall! We doubled checked all the horses, put on some more blankets, and made sure all was buttoned down tight for the weather.



Sally and I always worry about all of the animals out at Shiloh, and we can only relax when we know everyone is taken care of. All of the old guys, the crippled horses, horses with thinner coats, and horses with special needs are blanketed. Every horse at Shiloh has access to shelter at all times (both man made and thick trees), and the most needy horses have barn stalls. Daisy, Shaggy, and Flower have had to stay in their stall for most of the time, we just don't want them to wander during this cold weather. Daisy is very angry and hates her blanket! The ranch dogs have access to the heated office, it's nice and cozy in there with the heat turned up. The Feral Cats have tons of food and sleep under the office and in the blanket and feed rooms. The pigs' houses are deeply bedded with tons of straw for burrowing. The goats, burros, mules, and other wanderers have access to the barn and Mare Motel aisles as well as open bedded stalls. We moved Slew, the older crippled goat, into the barn stall with the new pig who we have named "Sausage Patty". (Can you stand it?)


We have also increased the amount of hay being fed at each feeding. This way all the horses, whether in pasture or in a corral, can eat hay continually to help stay warm.

Okay, we tried again. This time we tried to put sweatshirts on the pigs- it did not work...

Who knew that sweatshirts aren't made for pigs?

But, Slew does have one on. His is from CSI. He will be ready if there are any major crime scenes at the rescue. Let's hope there aren't any, but you just never know what might happen at Shiloh! :o)

Tuesday's Happenings, Lucero, and our Newest Arrival!

OUR NEW ARRIVAL! What is it?

It's another Pot Bellied Pig! She is a young female, under one year of age. We are currently thinking of a good name for her.

She was donated by her family in Pahrump who, sadly for them, just could not keep her any longer. They were so happy that she would have other pigs to hang out with. She will remain in a barn stall for a few days before we introduce her to Sonny and Cher.

There was not any snow at the ranch today, but everything was wet and muddy- and cold!

Poker, one of the horses we rescued from the Pahrump Animal Control auction a few months ago, was moved from Area 51 into Little Vacation Village today. With his advanced age, he needs the extra feed to keep his weight up. He fit right in and was happy with his new herd mates.

We got a blanket on Fred, the big mule. Now he will stay toasty warm as he roams the ranch. Go Fred!

Well, we finally found a blanket that fits her, it's Spur the ranch dog's but it works perfectly!

Today she was 4 days old and full of it! This little girl LOVES to run! Watch how she runs in and out of her stall, making her mother, Amiga, crazy!

Time to go into the turn out. The large turnout/arenas were slippery with mud, so she had to go into a round pen. Normally, we turn horses out in the large turn outs so they can stretch their legs properly- Round pens are good for training and working a horse, but, due to their smaller size, not too good for turn out. Lucero is so full of spirit- she loves to play! Her mother, Amiga, is doing much better now that she has given birth, she is much more comfortable on her sore feet. Amiga is a wonderful mother and keeps a very close eye on Lucero.

A Snowy Monday!

It was snowing today at the ranch! But, we were not able to get there because the pass was completely closed down! We got half way through and had to turn around, snow and ice were covering the road and nobody could get through. The guys said there is a lot of snow in the valley and all the horses are fine. They were enjoying their breakfast in the snow!

On another note, big thanks to all our Pahrump adopters and volunteers who contacted us about the sick horse at the Nye County Animal Shelter, we appreciate you guys letting us know. We contacted the Nye County Animal Control and the Shelter over the weekend, and again this morning, and offered the horse a home at Shiloh if needed. We also offered to bring him into the vet clinic for further care. Sadly, the horse is very sick and the decision may eventually be made to euthanise him at the shelter. I will let you know if we hear anything further.
