Halloween- a super busy day!

It was a beautiful day out at the ranch today! We all had a wonderful time!

First off, some super great news- Both Bonanza and Sidewinder have pending adoptions to a Las Vegas family! All of the family members rode both horses and it looks like a great match!

Charity was stuck down on the ground this morning. It's so cold out there at night and she had laid down and her arthritis made it difficult for her to get back up. We got her into a better position and gave her a boost. She was able to stand and walked off her stiffness (with a little Bute to help). This happens during the cold with some of the older guys, they just need a little help from us to get back up...

A Very Busy Friday and America

Don't forget- Join us at Shiloh tomorrow for our Halloween Celebration!

Bring your empty treat bag and trick or treat with the Shiloh Horses!

When:
Saturday, October 31st
8am until 1pm

Chia Pet, who is joining us on this blog via Satellite from her Realm, says: "Wear your costumes, or else!"

Sad news as Sanctuary Horse, America, passed away last night. About two months ago, we moved her into first Assisted Living and then the Gummies, because she was starting to fail a bit and she was losing weight and acting lethargic. We have been watching her closely over the past week- she never acted in pain but she was subdued and was losing her appetite. We had put a warm blanket on her and spent time with her. We knew her Shiloh Journey was coming to an end and we wanted her to be able to pass away at Shiloh and not have to be brought into the vet clinic. Last night she passed very naturally with absolutely no sign of a struggle. She passed in the Gummie Pen with her herd around her. America was with us at Shiloh for a little over a year, she had been dumped in the desert by her previous owners. She had a great life at Shiloh- she always lived in a pasture with herd mates and enjoyed her time lounging, eating and acting like a horse. Rest in Peace, America.

We have all been working very hard these past few days- getting our new shelters installed and getting everything ready for Halloween and Sunday's Clinic.

Our five new shelters were bought with our $3,000.00 EQUUS shelter grant and money raised from our beaded horseshoes. They are absolutley wonderful!

The new pasture has two of them...

The new pasture. Now we can really start using this pasture- we just cannot put horses in an area without access to shelter, so we have been waiting to use this pasture.

What an exhausting day!

Joe will be bringing a Mustang to demonstrate with and will be teaching participants to gain their horses' respect from the ground up. A perfect opportunity for Mustang adoptive owners! A great way to learn techniques to form a solid relationship with your horse from which to build upon.

All breeds and ages of horses are welcome to participate. Even Yearlings are welcome!

The cost for participants is $45.00 for horse/handler teams, the clinic can be audited for $20.00. Auditors can watch, record, ask questions from ringside.

The number of participants is limited, so please sign up early. To sign up for this wonderful opportunity, please email Eric at brumbychaser@hotmail.com.

Overnight boarding is available at Shiloh for $15.00 night, which includes a grass mix hay. We have lots of trailer parking as well and we will have some empty corrals that horses can be put into during the day on Sunday.

This is going to be a wonderful and educational day for everyone- come on out and join us!

A Windy Weds...

It has been a crazy two days at Shiloh!

The wind has been just horrible! We were getting gusts up to 60 miles an hour and when it gets like this, there is just not a lot we can do with the horses. The dust was blowing so badly yesterday and today that we could hardly see and this morning the wind was icy cold and we were freezing!

Here is Chia Pet modeling a Devil Costume reminding everyone to join us out at Shiloh on Saturday morning to celebrate Halloween with the horses. Some of the horses will be handing out candy and we will all be in costume. Come on out, wear your costume and join in the fun- Saturday, October 31st from 8am until 1pm. We even have a prize for best costume!

Abbey and Emily are back in town and will be heading home to Alaska on Monday. They will be dressing up Little Dude and Moses for Halloween. Here Emily greets Tanis...

We pulled out blankets today and put them on all of our Special Needs Horses as well as our very elderly guys. The desert wind is freezing and it is supposed to get into the mid 30's tonight. We don't want our older guys to have to use any extra energy to stay warm and we feel better knowing they have the extra protection and warmth during this cold weather.

We have moved Tequila into the Gummie Pen, he is in his mid 30's and eats very slowly with his few remaining teeth. In the Gummies he can eat his feed leisurely. Here he is toasty warm with his blanket on.
Sleetwood braved the wind and spent some time in the turn out...

Eagle in his blanket with Mendoza napping in the sun behind him.

We reinforced all of the pig areas as well and made sure they have plenty of thick straw to burrow in to stay warm. Jimmy Dean checks out his pile in Daisy's stall...

Monday's New Arrival

First off: Shiloh will be closed to all Visitors and Volunteers from November 3rd until November 15th. For liability reasons, and for the safety of all of the animals who call Shiloh home, ONLY owners of boarded horses are allowed at the ranch while we are out of town. Sally and I will be with Tony in New York City where we will be working and earning money for the rescue....

We welcomed a New Arrival today, this is Sleetwood Mac. He arrived from Oregon yesterday after being donated by his caring owner. Sleet had spent a day at Shiloh years ago, when he laid over at the rescue before he was picked up for his home in CA. He originally arrived from Finger Lakes in New York along with Shiloh Horse, Numerous. When we recently heard that Sleet's owner was having financial problems and could not keep him any longer, we felt a responsibility toward him and we offered him a home at Shiloh.
