Tuesday and the Three New Arrivals!

CALYPSO AND ARSON UPDATE: Calypso is holding her own, but not improving as much as we would like. She is still impacted. We are continuing her treatment though to try to get something moving, although it is still pointing toward a stone. Arson looks like he is responding to his antibiotics and is improving. They are both remaining in the clinic...

First off, HUGE THANKS to December Feed Fairies! The Feed Fairies bought an incredible 253 bags of Equine Senior for the Shiloh Horses. Please consider becoming a January Feed Fairy, where $10.00 makes a real difference.

Good news as Beau is adopted today to Sherry of Las Vegas! A great new owner for this very nice young Thoroughbred gelding.

Yesterday, Shiloh received our $5,000.00 grant check from the ASPCA for our Medical Area. This will help so many horses get the more intensive care they need. We will be combining this grant with the Levi Strauss building donation to make a great area of run ins and corrals for those horses who need extra care.

We picked up 150 more bags of shavings that had been donated to the horses. That is 300 bags of brand new shavings!

But, now for the three new arrivals from the Reno, NV area! These three seniors arrived last night. They are all sweet and we are happy to have them at Shiloh.

Abuelo, which means "Grandfather" in Spanish, is approx 30 years old and thin. But he is very gentle and settled right into his new home. Abuelo was found abandoned in the Northern Nevada Desert.

Stretch, named for his length and great height, is a approx 26 year old Holsteiner gelding. He craves attention and will follow anyone around who comes near him. He came with his longtime friend, Vanilla. They were at risk for being sent to the Fallon Slaughter auction after their owner passed away. Stretch is HUGE and must have really been something in his prime.

Vanilla is an approx 22 year old Draft mare. She is a bit shy and unsure of people, but after some initial grooming and spoiling, she settled down and began to enjoy herself.

Daria welcomed Abuelo to the rescue...

While, Sally checked out Stretch's height.

Then Stretch found three new girlfriends...
Laurie helped Vanilla feel more secure in her new surroundings...

Later, they enjoyed some grooming. Daria and Stretch bonded...

As did Robin and Abuelo...

Look who was back again, it's Kevin Bacon!

Kody and Darian had some fun with Tattoo...

Baja went into Jill and Sally's tackroom and made it a huge mess!

Jingle Bell hung out in the barn aisle for a while...
Sally unhooking the trailer.
Laurie and her husband gave Jill, Sally, and Tony Shiloh Letterman Jackets!

Monday's Happenings

FIRST OFF CALYPSO AND ARSON UPDATE: Well, CALYPSO is still showing colic signs and the vets are becoming more concerned that it is caused by a stone in her intestines. (For those of you who don't quite know what that is, check this out.) Sadly, if it is the case, we will have to make the hard decision to euthanise her. We are hoping that with the aggressive treatment she is receiving at the clinic that it will help her and allow her to turn the corner. Let's all think about her for the next 24 hours. ARSON: He is still swollen, but it has subsided a little bit with the aggressive antibiotics he is one. His eye is less swollen and he is a little bit perkier. They are both staying in the clinic.

It was a busy day today. Shiloh received a wonderful donation of almost 300 bags of shavings! They were kindly donated by horsewoman, Sherry, who couldn't use them at her facility. This is an incredible donation, this is over a year's worth of shavings! We are so excited- but the hard part is, Sally and I had to load them in the horse trailer! We loaded (along with Sherry's help) 150 this morning, another 150 more tomorrow. Both Sally and my arms feel like Spaghetti! :o) We have recruited Elisa and Tonya to help us in the morning.

The Shiloh trailer, and the Big Boss Truck, were stuffed!

Back at Shiloh, Rebel enjoyed a nice sun nap. The ranch is finally drying out a bit and many horses spend time laying in the warmer sun.

Elisa and Tonya worked horses. Here they are with Mercali and Tommy Haflinger.

Elisa has started Mercali under saddle, he is doing wonderfully.

Tommy!
Daisy wandered over to Jill's Pasture to visit with Tanis, Zuiderzee, and Sage. Daisy was marching all over the ranch!

Look who's coming to dinner! It's Kevin Bacon...

Sonny and Cher took a nice sun nap in their straw outside of their houses. Sausage Patti was spending all of her day in Assisted Living ...

Look at sweet Jingle Bell! Is she just the cutest old girl? She is getting so frisky now! She loves her barn stall, when we take her out of the turn out, we just let her go, and she trots all the way back home...

I think she is looking better already...
We have three new arrivals coming later tonight from the Reno area. They are all seniors and I will have photos and more about them on tomorrow's blog....

A Rescue Tribute Video

This wonderful video was made by a Shiloh supporter/adopter as a tribute to Shiloh and all horse rescues. It has great music and is very moving. The first set of horses were ones that we could not save at the slaughter auctions and who went to the Killers, it's sad for me to see them, I remember each one...

The last few days...

I am sorry that I haven't been blogging for the last three days! There has just been so much happening, I have just been swamped.

First off, Hollywood, one of my own old personal horses passed away suddenly on Friday morning. She was 30 years old and I owned her for 22 years, so it was devastating for me. Woody, who was my second horse after Serenity, was a wonderful and beautiful mare in her prime, she was a Jumper and an upper level Three Day horse who excelled at Cross Country, where it was rare that she would have a time fault. Woody had her quirks- in all of the 22 years right up until the end, she would NOT tie, she was impossible to keep weight on, and she was very vocal. Every morning, she would wait and whinny for her Equine Senior. Serenity and Woody spent the last few months in the Bungalows where they had an indoor stall and the freedom of the whole Bungalow turnout. Last Friday morning, she was found down in the early morning, and although Leo and Dave tried to get her up and standing, she just wouldn't. She was tired and she laid back with a sigh and passed away quietly. I was just rushing through the Shiloh gates when she passed, but I know that Dave and Leo showed her great kindness in her last few moments, something I am grateful for and something she deserved. She was not in pain, not sick, just old and tired. Hollywood was buried near her longtime friend, Austral, in Jill's pasture under the Mesquites. Sadly, Renny is now alone for the first time in almost 20 years, but she looks like she is making new friends with Jingle Bell, her new barn mate. It was very sad, as Renny would sniff the ground where Woody had laid and then call out over and over. I am so thankful, and I console myself with the fact that, Woody was well cared for, wanted for nothing, was loved and cherished all the way into her old age, and I saw her everyday for the past 22 years. She passed naturally, without pain, when her time came.

Below is a picture of me and Hollywood competing back in the old days. Thank you Woody for taking such good care of me over those incredible fences, you always kept me safe.

Rest in peace my old friend.
On a happier note, here are some pictures from the ranch from this past weekend:

Breezer sneaks a treat!

The Hickey Family and Deonna's father put a roof on our new Welcome/Adoption Center! It looks wonderful! THANK YOU!

Lucero couldn't decide if she wanted to lay inside or outside...

So, she chose both!

Serenity and new arrival, Jingle Bell in the big turnout. Bell is doing much better, she is eating like crazy and actually trotted a little in the turn out! Serenity, the bay, is my first horse that I got at age 14. Both Bell and Renny are living side by side in the barn.

But, just when things were getting better- we had another emergency! Calypso, who we treated for a mild case of colic on Friday afternoon, showed colic signs on Saturday morning. So, we decided to bring her into Desert Pines. We also took Arson back in, he had a swollen jaw and side of his face and was feeling very sick. We brought him in for an evaluation and to find out what is going on with him. We were concerned about an impacted tooth or something like that.

Calypso in the clinic...

She is tubed by Dr. Ballard. She has a strange impaction in her colon. She is doing fine in her hydration, so we are worried about a possible stone.

He checks her stomach fluid, which looked normal.

Her blood was drawn. We left Calypso in the clinic. I had an update on her this morning, she is doing a little bit better, but still has the impaction, although she is passing manure with oil in it from her tubing. I will know more tonight or in the morning.

Then, it was Arson's turn. He is looking so sad! Notice his swollen left cheek and eye, poor guy!

Poor Arson!

Dr. Ballard ultrasounds his cheek.

Then he checks way inside his mouth. Everything was inconclusive, but his bloodwork showed very elevated white blood cells showing an infection. We also kept Arson there so that he can be watched closely and treated very aggressively. I will keep everyone updated, he was still the same this morning after speaking to the vet.
To end on a brighter note, as this has been a hard week at the rescue, here are more pics from today:

A little Revenge! As usual, Salsa stuck his nose where it didn't belong! This time, the thing he stuck it in, stuck back!
Felipe's puppy, Coby looking super cute!

Happy Holidays!

It was Christmas Eve, and the pigs were out for revenge at Shiloh! We let Sausage Patti out and look what happened! Sally, the Pig Wrangler, has her work cut out for her! Good Luck!

It was Dave and Kody to the rescue! Parelli the Pig, Dave!

Happy Holidays to everyone! Have a wonderful night and keep an eye out for Santa...

Daisy

Here is a short video of a few minutes in the life of Daisy. I caught her wandering out of her barn stall this morning and immediately finding and chewing on an old stick. I have no idea why she thought this stick was so wonderful, but she loved it. (FYI I took it out of her mouth after this video!) Daisy does whatever she wants to do, period...

Tuesday

Another busy day today. Clear, but cold.

Sunday took a nap with Sitka...

And then they went out for a walk!

We cleaned out Charmin's tooth which has an old fracture, food gets stuck in it and it stinks!

Sally spent some time with Sausage Patti, who followed her around...

Don't they look cute together?

Then we got in a New Arrival, a starved older Thoroughbred mare who came from Animal Control. She was originally found abandoned in the desert, and thanks to caring horsewoman, Billy, she has found her home at Shiloh. We have named her "Jingle Bell".

Still spry enough for a nice roll...

Luckily, Jingle Bell is still interested in eating and we are hoping with the proper care and feeding, that she will be able to make a recovery.

Robin and Daria, along with Jill's sister, Sarah, spent time grooming and spoiling her...

They shedded off alot of dead and matted hair...

Daria has fallen for her...
And has become Jingle Bells Holiday Sponsor!

Into her straw bedded stall...

Two layers of warm blankets and good food and water and she was content. Let's all hold a good thought for this sweet old mare as she fights to recover...
