Surgery and Recovery

As many of you already know, I had major back surgery last week.

I have had a bad back since I was a teen-ager, not unusual for those of us who have ridden horses all of our lives. My getting back into competitive riding again last year did contribute to the worsening of my symptoms, but I have always known that eventually I would need back surgery. I do not the normal disc compression problem, my problem is more than that. My spine actually slipped at L5/S1 (a grade 2+ slippage) and along with the resulting disc area complete destruction, I was experiencing severe nerve damage down my left leg and into my left foot. I had developed foot drop in my foot and was having trouble walking and standing. So, the time had come to get it fixed once and for all.

From the side. My spine was pulled back into place and screwed into place. My prognosis is great and I actually should be better than ever once I heal.

It looks like it will be a year before I can get back into the saddle- but I am just thankful that I am will be able to ride again. Jedermann will continue competing with my sister Sarah in San Diego- I will be their groom. It is going to be a fun year for Jeder and Sarah!

I spent two days in the hospital and am now on 30 days of bed rest at home. It is extremely important that I allow the screws in my spine to fuse and hold, so I cannot do anything except rest. I am able to get around and walk, but am weak and in pain.

I will try to update everyone with the Shiloh Happenings from here. We are keeping things quiet and low key at the ranch for now, nothing major will be going on. Sally is bearing the brunt of the ranch work and is also dealing with the county inspections of our new ranch homes. Of course, we have been waiting for our house inspections for months and now they are finally moving forward when I am not there to help!

We really appreciate the extra help, understanding and support our hard working volunteers have been giving. We really can't thank everyone enough!

On Saturday, the 50-60 MPH winds knocked down two of our old shelters in Assisted Living. Thankfully, no horses were hurt but it was very scary for all of us trying to get the shelters picked up and stored safely. The wind can pick the very heavy shelters right up and into the air!

Alydar, one of our goats, found shelter from the wind and blowing dirt in one of Assisted Living's feeders...The next morning, the dog office and the Cherry Pie's patio was completely buried in blown dirt!

I have been swamped the past few weeks and found it difficult to find the time to post on the blog. Not only do I run Shiloh, and all that entails, but I also run my late husband Tony's business as well. My business partner and I are working hard on licensing Tony's artwork, something that Tony worked for as well. I am continuing the business and it has been taking up alot of time. It is a way that I can honor Tony and his artwork as well as support all of the animals at Shiloh.

I am also scheduled for major back surgery next weds (I had been scheduled for yesterday but it was postponed at the last minute).

So needless to say, my life is very busy (but isn't everyones?).

But, I finally took some photos today at the ranch and here they are! Enjoy!

Our New Arrival, Yep

Yesterday morning this very sweet mare was found dumped on the side of the road about one mile from Shiloh. Our guys went out with the trailer and picked her up and brought her back to the rescue...
Poor girl. She is very friendly and loves people and attention. We have named her Yep after a Shiloh running joke. It's a cute name for a cute horse...

She spent the day settling into one of our Medical Units...
BUT- here is the condition of her feet. These are her hind hooves. She has three shoes on and a huge painful draining abscess along the coronary band on this one foot and her hoof is deformed and twisting...

Her other hind foot was incredibly overgrown with it's shoe. She was obviously not able to walk very well and was in pain...
Shiloh's farrier, Osvaldo, worked on her today. She was very good for him and stood quietly...

Leo had to help her stay balanced...

Yep tried hard to let Osvaldo help her...

He pulled the shoes off and trimmed as much as he felt she could handle. While she was still uncomfortable, she was standing and walking much better. We have her on Bute, she has a good appetite and she has a deeply bedded area in her stall to encourage her to lay down.

While we feel that we cannot undo the damage that has been done to her by her previous neglect, we will try to get her as comfortable as we can for as long as we can. We will continue to slowly work on her feet and she will be checked out by our vet. We will do what we can to get her to a quality of life level where she can enjoy what time she has left...

For now, we encourage everyone who comes out to Shiloh over the next month or so to spend some time with Yep to show her that she is loved and that she is now safe.

Don't forget that this coming Saturday is a Shiloh work day- we will be reconfiguring some of our senior areas. We will begin work around 10am (unless we have an unforeseen emergency). Saturday, January 7th- Work day at Shiloh!

We will be fixing more of our fencing on Saturday, January 7th. We will be reconfiguring The Gummies, Little Vacation Village among other pens.

If you would like to come out and pitch in- we would love to have the extra help!

We will being about 10am.

Starting Out the New Year Right!

A wonderfully busy weekend with tons of visitors, volunteers and activity. Big thanks to everyone who helped us out on Saturday as we fixed our pasture fencing. The fixed up fence lines look so much better and are so much sturdier!
It was a huge job, but with everyone's help it all got done. We have figured out that if we zig-zag our panels that they are much stronger for the big runs of fencing. It only took us eight years to figure that out but better late than never!

When everyone helps out it makes hard work fun!

The weather has been just perfect out at the ranch although it is very cold at night and in the early mornings.

Some wonderful news as Laguna and Brisa were both adopted to new homes. Laguna headed off to her new home and Brisa will remain boarded at Shiloh...

Speaking of bright futures- little Sunday is now almost three and a half and is progressing in his training. Here, with the help of Eric, his owners Dave and Deonna get him used to carrying a rider. Sunday looks like he is going to stay pony sized- he is so cute!

Ed came up with a great idea. Whenever we have a downed horse (like one of our old guys) we have to pull them into our horse trailer in order to get them to the vet where they can be treated. With our huge elderly population, unfortunately, this is something that we need to do at least once a month or so. So, we figured out we need some sort of sled that we can roll the horses onto to make it easier to move them and get them up the trailer ramp. Ed figured out that he can customize an old heavy plastic truck bed. He trimmed it and out holes on it for handles. It's a great idea and will really come in handy in emergencies.

I decided to try it out- it worked great! We have dubbed it the Ed Sled...

I have gotten back into teaching riding lessons, something I have always loved doing. I like to help Shiloh Adopters get going with their Shiloh Horses and watch them progress to fun trail and pleasure riding...

Here is Donna and her newly adopted horse, Frost, in their lesson. Frost and Donna are a wonderful match and it is really nice to see Frost begin to blossom under her love and care...

Willie and Elaine had an awesome lesson this morning- they have really progressed and I am so proud of them both!

Wille and Sage were used in a lesson yesterday with two young sisters- both horses were great and the girls had a great time...

Shiloh's Holiday Hours

Shiloh will be closed to visitors and volunteers on Christmas Day- but we will be back open starting on Monday, December 26th and will remain open for all of the following week including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Our regular volunteer and visiting hours are from 8am until 1pm daily.

Growing older at Shiloh...

Something that alot of our readers may not know is that Shiloh has a huge number of elderly horses in the rescue. We currently have 127 horses in the rescue, 62 of these horses are age 25 and above, and of those 62 horses, 26 of them are estimated to be 30 years of age and above.

That means that almost half of our horses are very elderly. These horses take extra care and feeding to keep them healthy. All of our old guys wear warm winter blankets, eat formulated feed and live in herds with like horses.

Our Feed Fairy program is a huge help with feeding these special horses and we appreciate every bag of feed that our Feed Fairies help to purchase.

I have always loved the older horses. Most of the older Shiloh horses are horses who, when they reached a certain age or were unable to meet their owners activity level, were dumped for slaughter. To all of us at Shiloh- these once unwanted horses are priceless and they mean alot to us. Most of our old guys are able to help teach people about grooming, handling and safety around horses and are the horses who are regularly used in our weekend Basic Horsemanship classes. They are spoiled and appreciated by staff, visitors and volunteers.

Sadly, because of Shiloh's large elder population, this means we too often have to say good bye to our old friends and gently send them on their way to Greener Pastures. It is never easy but it is a part of our rescue and our mission. We are able to console ourselves knowing that the time they lived at Shiloh, however lengthy or brief, was a time of love, comfort and kindness.

To Our Wonderful Volunteers

I just wanted to take a minute to thank ALL of our wonderful Shiloh Volunteers. Hardly a day goes by that one of you doesn't take time out of your own hectic lives and drive all the way out to the ranch to pitch in. Both Sally and I want you to know how much we appreciate that.

Our animal loving volunteers are always there to fill water buckets, groom or bathe the rescue horses, to help us set up or dismantle corrals, perform wound care, work with the horses and help us with just about anything that needs to be done that day.

Sally and I are usually so busy that we might not have the time we would like to thank you all properly- but please know that your help and support has helped to make Shiloh the interesting and fun place that it is today.

Thank you also to our visitors who stop by to wander the ranch, hand out carrots and appreciate our beloved animals. We love you all too!

Of course, I can't leave out our great cyber visitors and supporters who follow all of our Shiloh Adventures on the Internet. Even if many of you cannot physically be out at Shiloh- we know you are there in spirit!

In the fun times and in the sad times- our volunteers, visitors and supporters are always standing next to us- welcoming new horses to Shiloh, rejoicing when a horse moves on to a new home and crying alongside of us as we comfort and say good bye to our old friends whose time has come to pass on to Greener Pastures.

This is Laguna who just returned from her adoptive home due to downsizing. She was adopted in 2008 by Sandy Valley Ranch across the street and was used in their trail riding program. She looks wonderful and is now looking for her new home. A nice big beautiful trail mare. She is a 7 year old reg Thoroughbred, sound and healthy.

We have pulled Orleans, an older Thoroughbred mare, out of our pasture. She is suffering from Melanoma growths in her throat area and we suspect that it is internal as well as she is beginning to lose weight. We are watching her closely now...

One of our winterized Pig Boxes with the donated straw. (Someone tore open a bale last night and threw it everywhere.) I could see a pig's bed in there so I know one of them is using it to stay comfy at night. Jimmy Dean has a similarly bedded box in the Barn Stall which he loves!

After last night's rain, it was a bad hair day for Aztec...

And not just on his head! With all of the shelters he has access to, why does he feel the need to spend the night in the rain?

A great weekend at Shiloh, lots going on as usual.

First off, we all had a great time seeing our Facebook friend Norma on Saturday. Don't be a stranger Norma, come on back soon! By the way, if you haven't already friended us on Facebook, you should! More good news as both Rabbit and Slider were adopted this weekend! Two really nice geldings who have a new life ahead in their new homes...

Just in case people forgot that Shiloh is located near Las Vegas, Sin City. I love this town! Are Sally and I looking for some extra money to help finance the rescue? No! Thanks to the Travel Channel's "Sandmasters" show we were in downtown Las Vegas this morning to pick up some donated straw...

Dave and Felipe met us down there with their trucks. The production crew donated 30 new bales of straw, something we can always use but we hate to have to spend money on...

The show created a huge sand sculpture down on Fremont Street, it was really cool! The straw was used as a back drop...

As it always seems to be lately, I have fallen behind in blogging! I do try to post everyday but somedays I just can't find the time. Sorry!

A new Shiloh sign on our main gate- all visitors, volunteers and boarders- please keep the gates securely closed. The chain needs to be wrapped around the gate and clipped securely. Margarita and Tamale (two of our wandering Burros) have figured out how to open the gate and they now love to go over to the ranch across the street to eat their feed! If everyone can just double check the gate that would be great and a big help to our neighborly relations!

Okay, now this is cool! For those of you who haven't already seen this on Shiloh's Facebook, fifteen years ago an artist painted a wonderful mural of Tony on the 101 Freeway in Hollywood. It was recently moved off of the freeway by the original artist and repainted on a safer location on Hollywood Blvd. Tony LOVED the freeway mural and whenever we were in Los Angeles, we always had to drive by it. When it was moved a few months ago, I was contacted by the artist who asked me if I wanted the original freeway mural. Of course, I said yes! After thinking about where I could place it at the ranch, I decided on the side of my new ranch house. So he came out this past weekend and installed it for me. I am so excited, this mural meant so much to Tony and now it is always going to be with me. I know he would like that... (Please ignore the bare "scorpion habitat" of my new house- I haven't moved in yet or done any landscaping!)

We let Pokie Dot out to wander for a while. We have found that sometimes the shy horses do well with some time of freedom. Once they realize that all is good and no one is going to hurt them, and that we are actually ignoring them a bit- they usually begin to seek out attention from us. Pokie already will come up for a carrot, something she did not want to do in her corral...

Shiloh News Flash! Longtime faithful Shiloh volunteer and supporter, Yvonne Boland, is walking in the Las Vegas Half Marathon today!

Yvonne is a cancer survivor, and an all around animal lover, who can often be found at Shiloh on the weekend when she and her fellow "Carroter", Patti, hand out carrots to each and every horse on the ranch.

We are thinking of you Yvonne, and we are very proud of you!

While it was cold, rainy and even snowing in Las Vegas this morning, it was dry at the rescue just very, very cold. But, it was snowing quite hard in the pass early this morning.

Okay, so I had just dumped and refilled the Gummie Saloon water buckets when Vista came up for a drink. Now you can see how much food gets washed out of their mouths and into their water buckets! With little to no teeth in their mouths, the Gummies are continually gunking up their water which is why we dump it multiples time each day...

We are planning a large spring 2012 rummage sale to benefit the Shiloh Horses!

The sale will be one day and will be held in town (Las Vegas or Henderson) somewhere (location to be determined).

So, we are looking for donated items to sell. We are starting early and planning ahead!

We will take just about anything (except large appliances): All clean and usable furniture, housewares, small appliances, lamps, music Cd's, hardware, tools, collectibles, antiques, decorative items, any and all clothing (must be cleaned), shoes, boots, bicycles. Even cars, trucks or motorcycles.

We moved the Brat Pack wooden shelter over near the Gummie Saloon. We created a new pen- the Gummie Bar- for our two special needs boarded horses. Now, they are out of the barn, together and can enjoy the daily action of the rescue...

First off, Shiloh WILL BE OPEN to visitors and volunteers this Friday, Saturday and Sunday during our normal working hours, 8am until 1pm. So, come on out and work off some of your Thanksgiving dinner at Shiloh!

Some good news as little Jack has been happily adopted to a new family! He left today for his new home where he will be spoiled by little girls and a horse loving family...

Now some sad news as we had to have Valentine euthanised in the vet clinic this afternoon. She was down this morning and just didn't have the strength to hold herself up. We have been watching her closely for the past two weeks as we suspected that she had recently suffered a stroke. (Notice her loose lip in the above photo- she also had weakness in her hind legs.) She spent the last bit of time in our Barn where she wore a warm blanket and had as much food as she could eat. This morning, we knew her time had come and with help from everyone at Shiloh, we were finally able to get her up and into the horse trailer for the ride to the clinic. Val lived at Shiloh for the past three years and had a good horse life here. She enjoyed days out in the pastures with her herdmates and attention from staff and volunteers. Rest in peace, Val...

Rescue work continues as Pokie Dot returned to Shiloh from her adoptive home. Her family was having financial difficulty so Pokie came back. She is super cute (and fuzzy) and will be looking for another home soon. She is still shy with people and we will continue to work with her until she is re-adopted.

Pokie Dot only has one eye- we had her injured eye removed when she was originally rescued by Shiloh off of the Fallon Feedlot in 2009.

Young Slider is heading off to "school" with our local trainer. He just needs more work than we all have time to give him right now, so he is heading to the trainer's ranch. He will be back in a month or so, ready to find his new home. (He was recently adopted but his adoption fell through.)

I'm Back!

I am so sorry that it has been such a long time since I blogged- but I have been out of town in San Diego competing, riding in a clinic and helping my sister out with a big project.

First off, Jedermann and I ended in 6th place at Galway a few weeks ago at the Novice level. We did okay in Dressage- but it was POURING rain during our test and we slipped and slided around the Dressage ring. We had one rail down in Stadium- but again it was POURING during our round and the arena was sloppy mud and I had to put long studs into Jedermann's shoes (which had been drilled and tapped just in case we needed studs). We had a clean cross country round, it rained in our warm up but the sun broke out of the clouds as we entered the start box (thank you, Tony!). I was very happy with our rounds as we were moving up and I had just wanted to have it under our belt for next year's show season.

I stayed in San Diego for another week to act as Barn Manager for my sister, Sarah, who was holding a cross country training session for the South Korean show jumping team. They needed to do some cross country jumping and my sister was chosen as their coach. I am making a video of the experience which I will be posting in the next few days. It was alot of work but a great experience. It was a great honor for Sarah and she did an awesome job with the riders!

But, here are some photos I took yesterday at Shiloh- I know you have been waiting to see the Shiloh adventures! Enjoy!

We have four bales of straw that need to be pocked up from a donator. We are looking for a volunteer with a truck who can pick up the straw and bring it out to Shiloh.

The straw is located on Yellow Canary Avenue in Las Vegas, the crossroads are Desert Inn and Hualipai.

Volunteer Needed for Pick- up...

We have some donated items which need to be picked up- half a bale of hay, a small bag of Equine Senior, some medications, a trough, etc. We are looking for a Shiloh volunteer with at least a small truck who can swing by, pick up the items and bring them out to Shiloh.

The items are located on Gillespie, near Bermuda and South Las Vegas Blvd. They can be picked up on Saturday or a day after Saturday.

If you think you can do it, please email Jill at shilohhorse@aol.com for the full address and contact info of the donator. The volunteer can contact the donator directly to arrange a convenient pick up.

We have some donations (buckets, used tack, one hay feeder, etc) that need to be picked up and brought out to Shiloh. We are looking for a volunteer to possibly pick them up for us.

The donated equiptment is located at All Storage in Las Vegas on Sahara, between Buffalo and Durango. The donations need to be picked up BY THIS SUNDAY AT NOON.

Back at Shiloh and our New Hay Fund...

Shiloh's biggest expense by far is Hay, and with Hay prices on the rise, we have created a new Hay Fund. To save money, we feed the large bales which cost approx $260-$280 per ton. With 120 horses currently in the rescue, we feed two large bales per day, which is equal to one ton per day. Subtracting the expenses of boarded and privately owned horses, which are NEVER paid for using donated money, the rescue horses hay costs approx $200.00 per day. Now people can become Hay Sponsors and can directly help us with this expense. While any amount to this Fund is appreciated I have broken it down into suggested increments:

One full day's hay donation (two large bales) is $200.00
Three quarters is $150.00
One half of a day's hay (one large bale) is $100.00
One quarter is $50.00

The Shiloh Cleanup and Some Help from the Girl Scouts...

I am behind in my blogging as Jedermann and I am currently in San Diego getting ready for our next horse show...

Last Saturday was Shiloh junk pile clean up day- something we all dreaded having to do. But with everyone pitching in, it was done quickly and looks way better.

Shiloh was also visited by a Girl Scout troop who brought lots of donations...

First of all, the Girl Scouts had to meet and hug little Florecita on the Cherry Pie grass...

The girls brought a whole trailer full of water and feed tubs, rubber mats, blankets, grooming equipment, tack, halters, etc. All of these donations were gathered at our vet, Desert Pines, and the girls gathered them up and brought them all out to the rescue. HUGE THANKS to the girls and the clients of DP who donated to Shiloh!

Even Aztec was excited and figured this must be what Christmas is like...

Afterward, the troop went to work grooming the horses in the Gummie Saloon. Everyone enjoyed that...

Meanwhile, over at the junk yard...

Everyone dug in and got to work. Here the guys drag out stuff that was buried by the wind...

The clean up task was daunting...

But, Sally got everyone organized.

Working hard!

Old metal was piled up to be hauled away, wood was piled up to be burned and everything was straightened up...We found lots of usable stuff that had been buried and unable to be reached...

The end result! Later, the guys added a fence line here to protect the junk pile from the wandering herds...

Over in Gummie Saloon, new member Melvyn has hooked up with Heavenly and they were seen sharing Feed Fairy food...

Then it was time for the thing we were all dreading- moving the Easy Street horses out and moving the Boarders in. Now, the majority of the Easy Street horses are very elderly with arthritic legs and other health issues- not that you would know it becauset as soon as we went in- they all seemed to sense something was up and they all took off like a herd of wild Mustangs! Manes and tails flying, hooves thundering, quick turns, bucks, squeals, dust flying- it was a merry chase. There goes Ketchum now!

Old Wampum and Indio had a great time and outlasted and outplayed the rest of herd!

But, in the end, we got them all and off they went into Okay Corral and Big Pasture. Of course, that caused a whole new wild scene as they got used to their new homes and herd mates. With so many people helping out and so many horses moving around, in true Shiloh fashion, we had a few great escapes from the pastures. Finally, everyone settled down to their hay, no worse for wear...

He proceeded to pull stuff out of the trash just in case she might have thrown something important away on accident...

Then he helped her organize containers. Good job Mojo, we all know how much Sally appreciated your "help"...

Later, Mojo was seen bragging to his friends about his helpfulness but Aztec did not look impressed...

We had two electricians out to Shiloh yesterday and today- they were looking for a short in our wiring. They finally found it and the power is back on in the Cherry pie. Thanks to Dave Hickey who arranged to have the guys come out...

First off, we are declaring this coming Saturday (October 15th) as a Shiloh Work Day! We need to straighten up our "junk pile" and throw lots of unusable stuff away. Our junk pile has grown and is taking over, so it's time to get it back in control. We will be cleaning up from 9am until 11am, so anyone who wants to pitch in is welcome! It's not that hard of work- but the more people we have to pitch in the faster and easier it will be...

It was a beautiful day today, clear blue sky and warm sun...

I tried to get some photos of Fame but she follows too closely and it's difficult...

Fame has really filled out and is actually moving sound on her leg. When she arrived she had a fracture in her forearm that had not been set- we just gave her time to let it naturally set as she was still very young. We weren't sure what her prognosis was going to be but it has healed remarkably well and she is actually looking for her new home and should be able to have a full future. She is just over 2 1/2 years of age now and should be given extra time to allow her bones to mature before she is actually started. She will do best in a pleasure riding home- she loves attention and is very friendly.

We are working to turn the Easy Street pasture into a Boarder Pasture. So, we are fixing the fence line a bit.

A very busy and beautiful weekend at the rescue. We had lots of volunteers and visitors out, including a troop of Girl Scouts working toward their Horsemanship Badge.

It was beautiful out today- cold and crisp with tons of incredible white clouds. It had rained in the night so everything was cleaned off and the flies are almost gone!

I worked with Rabbit today- he is a big gelding who will make someone a really nice riding horse. He is more used to being ridden western and out on trail, but I am working on his arena work as well. I should have some under saddle video of him sometime this weekend...

As I said, the clouds were spectacular- clouds can be just incredible in the desert. They look like snow capped mountains over the rescue...

How nice it would be to really be able to go back in time...

Yesterday I spent the day exploring Colonial Williamsburg. I have been there many times but on this trip I have no set schedule or time table. With no animals to care for for a few days, I get up when I wake up- not when my five dogs who usually sleep with me in bed decide it's time for me to get up. So, after a nice breakfast at a pancake house, off I went.

Strangely, but probably not surprisingly, the only photos I took all day were of horses and a colonial stable at the Governor's Palace!

A team of horses during their break. They have teams of draft crosses pulling carriages for tourists. The horses all look in excellent shape, good feet, well cared for. (Sorry, that is the horse rescuer in me!)

Raising my Sails...

I know this sounds weird, but I had my first meal alone in a restaurant this morning! I usually opt for a fast food drive through, but frankly, I was getting tired of fast food. So, I stopped at a Williamsburg coffee shop and had a great breakfast.

Stepping out alone is getting easier every day.

I came across a brochure at my hotel about taking a trip on a schooner on the York River out of Yorktown, so I went ahead and bought a ticket for a two hour tour. One of my Dutch ancestors sailed on a fishing vessel in 1573 out of Newfoundland, hey, maybe it's in my blood? I know it's not the same- but a journey is a journey.

I had a great time out on the ship, talked with the fellow passengers and even raised a sail.

As one of my relatives, Sherry VanOeveren Bouwman, told me- we have strong women in our family. I do have a long line of strong ancestors behind me, we all do. The motto of Zeeland, an area of the Netherlands where some of my family came from is, "I struggle and I emerge". I can feel myself getting more confident and balanced, my priorities are becoming clearer again- I am more encouraged about the future and I am looking forward to getting to it. I accept Tony's passing better now- he lived a long and full life, now it's my turn to continue my journey to my own long and full life. I know I will see him again, and what a shame it would be if I didn't have my own life tales to tell him.

Oh, and I ate dinner alone tonight at a nice restaurant in Williamsburg and I didn't feel awkward at all!

Journey to Jamestown

"A verie fit place for the erecting of a great cittie", a sentence used to describe the settlement founded in 1607 in tidewater Virginia. Jamestown- the place known for Captain John Smith, Pocahantas, Powhatan and the "starving time".

I have always found Jamestown to be extremely fascinating, even moving. Something has always drawn me there. Who knows, if we do indeed have past lives, maybe I was here at some point in some way?

Pocahantas. We all know her story- but the most interesting part for me is when she visited England in 1616 with her settler husband, John Rolfe. Sadly, in 1617, Pocahantas fell ill and died on her return trip. She is buried far from home in Gravesend, England.

Within the last 10 years, the actual site of James Fort has been found and excavated. Visitors can see the actual dimensions of the 1607 fort, it is amazing. I like to stand in the middle of what was the fort, look up into the sky or out over the James River and imagine what it was like over 400 years ago...

There is a great museum on the site where hundreds of artifacts are on display. This is one of my favorites- a pair of dog paw prints (a big dog and a little dog) in a discarded tile. I love knowing that dogs were dogs- even 400 years ago!

Navy Dinner

I attended the US Memorial Lone Sailor dinner last night. The Lone Sailor is awarded to "those who have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers and, in doing so, have exemplified the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment from their earlier service in the armed forces."

Tony received the award in 1994. This year's recipients were Jerry Coleman, the only Major League Baseball player who has seen combat during two wars as a Marine Aviator (he is now known as the voice of the San Diego Padres). Actors Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges and their father, Lloyd Bridges for their Coast Guard service. Bob Feller, a Major League Baseball player who enlisted in the US Navy within days of the attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a gun captain aboard the battleship USS Alabama. Brian Lamb, founder and CEO of C-SPAN and Navy Veteran.

It was a great honor to attend the dinner, Tony was a huge supporter of the Armed Forces and I will continue that support for him. I met so many wonderful and friendly people- I had many people stop by my table to tell me how much they loved Tony. I had a wonderful escort to the dinner, Michael Quigley, who works at Navy Intelligence. Thank you, Michael!

I left Washington, DC today and am slowly making my way to Jamestown, one of my favorite places to visit...

So far, so good!

The Navy Memorial

I stopped by the US Navy Memorial this morning to meet up with one of my friends who works there. Tony was a big supporter of the Memorial, donating money to create a commemorative wall, etc and I am looking to continue his support in his name.

I had a tour with tonight's Lone Sailor award recipients and their families and then a quick lunch. We will all meet later tonight for the black tie dinner.

I Made It!

I made it safe and sound to Washington, DC.

My plane made a very weird and alarming sound before taking off, which freaked all is passengers out- but after a few minutes, yes minutes, it stopped and it was smooth flying from then on.

Next, I tackled driving my little rental car through a dark and rainy night to my hotel- that got a bit hairy too. I drove like what I am- a tourist!

Now, am off to have a drink with friends of mine and Tony's from the Navy...

My Journey...

Today I headed out on a journey. By myself, no one with me. Just me, alone.

I have never actually really traveled alone before. I was with Tony since the age of 24 and now, at 41, maybe it is high time I learned how. I am very shy at heart and can feel very awkward around strangers and the thought of traveling alone is quite scary for me. Even the first time I went to a movie alone a few months ago was a big step for me.

Here is how this all happened, a few months ago I was invited to attend a dinner at the US Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. Tony and I had often attended this dinner in the past and I really wanted to go to represent Tony with his friends at the Memorial. At the time we made the plans to attend, my regular traveling companions were going to go with me. But, as the time grew shorter, they both realized that they would not be able to travel. I had a choice- cancel my attendance at the dinner, or take a huge step, and go alone.

Tony was a longtime supporter of the Navy Memorial and had been honored there multiple times. I felt it was my duty to continue his support, so I had made a donation in his name and RSVP'ed. I couldn't really back out now- the day before I was scheduled to depart.

So, early this morning, as Tony would say, I climbed into the "belly of the big iron bird" and flew to DC. As I have done all of his past year whenever I traveled, I cried in the airplane. Traveling now makes me miss Tony very much- after all, we traveled the world together. But, in an attempt to not be the weird crying girl in the plane and make my seat mates extremely uncomfortable, I took deep breaths and tried to encourage myself to be strong and to be excited about my adventure ahead. With Tony's one year anniversary of his passing fast approaching at the end of the month, I have been feeling extremely depressed and having a very difficult time.

It is an adventure because I actually am not just attending the dinner and then flying home- I have also rented a car and am going to spend a few days seeing the sights. I LOVE history and am planning to drive from DC to visit historic spots.

After all I have gone through in the past year, especially the past few weeks, I think it is time for me to find out who Jill Curtis really is. Not as the wife, or widow, of a Hollywood Icon- but as a 41 year old woman who is now on her own. I no longer have the protection of my husband, who was beloved wherever he went.

What do I want my life to be? How do I honor Tony and yet move ahead with the second half of my life? What will my life be like now? I need to spend some time alone and away to try to figure it all out.

So, I will be blogging from the road for a few days and I will be learning about myself. And, I think I have a lot to learn! Maybe together, we can all learn to step out of our comfort zones and keep on moving forward in our lives...

Back Out at Shiloh...

Finally we were back out at Shiloh after some of our travels. We do leave out of town again on weds, so the rescue is still closed to volunteers and visitors until September 30th when we will be back on our normal schedule.

Sad news as we had to have the vet out today and had to have two of our old guys, Gomez and Shadow, put down. Both of their conditions had just deteriorated and we did not want their quality of life to be affected anymore than it already was. Shadow was in his 30's and we think Gomez was almost 40. They were both euthanised in their barn stalls while they were eating food and they both passed very quickly and peacefully. As sad as we are to say good bye to these old Gummie friends, we thank them both for having been a part of the Shiloh Family for so many years. We pray for them as they continue their journey...

But, some happy news as little Dynamite was happily adopted to a family today! He hopped right into the trailer and headed on his way to his new home and future...

Odds and Ends

As you know, I have been out of town, so I have fallen behind in the blog...

This past weekend, Jedermann and I competed at Copper Meadows in CA. We scored a 22.5 in our Dressage on the first day, went double clean on Cross Country on the second day and went double clean on the third day's Stadium round. We began and ended in First Place in our Division! I ordered videos of all three phases of Copper, as soon as they are posted I will add them to our blog and Facebook.

HUGE thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement. Thanks to Shiloh Friends, Sharil and Megan, who came, pitched in and groomed for me at this show. Special thanks to my horse show mom, Sally, and my sister/trainer, Sarah, for helping Jeder and I finished at the top. Next show, November's Galway in Temecula.

Thank you also to our wonderful volunteers and hard working guys, Leo, Felipe and Diego, who held down the ranch while we were gone...

NOTE: Sally and I will be out of town for the remainder of September, so Shiloh will be closed to all visitors and volunteers until September 30th when we will reopen.

More good news as Will left this past weekend for his new adoptive home. Will was born at Shiloh 3 1/2 years ago and is now beginning his new life's journey...

This morning I uttered the words we all fear the most, "We have to fix Angel's clothing." It such a pain, first of all, she hates to be caught so it's a big dramatic production to get her in the pasture. Usually it involves all of her pasture mates joining in the chase which quickly grows out of control- old and lame Sanctuary horses racing around joyfully on three legs, bucking horses, barking dogs, dust flying, etc. Then, once Angel is caught, she won't stand still for anything. You have to take your life into your hands to change her clothes. It's kind of like a pit stop in the Indy 500- you just get in, get it done and get out. As soon as we are finished, off she goes, straps and sheets flapping and we all just look at each other and grimace, dreading her next wardrobe malfunction... Only at Shiloh!

Felipe tried to trick her into thinking he really wasn't coming for her- but that's the oldest trick in the book! They ALWAYS know when you are coming for them...

The chase is on! I had to tie her hood to her sheet, when she put her head down her hairless neck was exposed to the sun. Her clothing is UV protective...

And this is the finished result- I know, it pretty much looks the same as the before photo- but her neck sheet is now secured. All that drama for one little adjustment...

Special needs senior, Shadow, is spending some time in the Barn so we can watch his weight and treat his skin cancer. We have been treating skin cancer on his sheath for years, he had more skin cancer removed by the vet last week. Shadow is ancient and is normally with the Gummies, he should be able to move back out with his friends soon...
