The Newest Fallon Feedlot Horses

These are photos of the 8 new rescues on the Fallon Feedlot. They will be shipping to Shiloh either Thursday or Friday of next week.

We saved all 8 for a total of $1750.00. We used our Slaughter Fund as well as Shiloh's general account to pay for them.

A Muddy Thursday...

A Reminder: Shiloh will be closed to Visitors and Volunteers from Friday, Jan 29th until Monday, Feb 1st. Thank you!

Volunteer Needed! We are looking for someone who can pick up a 28' Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer (in good condition) on the South side of Las Vegas and bring it out to Shiloh. Shiloh can reimburse for gas! If you have a truck that has a goose neck hitch, and are interested in helping out, please email Jill at shilohhorse@aol.com for more info. Thank you! :o)

Well, it started out as a very foggy and wet day at Shiloh, but once the sun came out, things warmed up and all the horses enjoyed the sun.

The fog in Sandy Valley on the drive in. It was so thick...
Okay Corral this morning...
The fog was so weird!

Look at that mud!!

Echo Echo just looked out of his barn stall and said, "No Way!"

BB and Nevada have a high ground area that is dry, but we moved them temporarily to another Medical Stall that was drier.

Sitka wandered on the Cherry Pie grass...

And then stole Donkey Otie's feed.

Jackson had gotten stuck down in the mud early this morning and the guys had to get him up. He, and his blanket, were completely covered in mud. We had to clean him off, he was miserable. Sally, Sharil and Tanya worked on him. Poor Jackson, his Shivers (a progressive neurological problem) has really gotten worse over the past week. The deep sticky mud doesn't help, but he is now having problems with his front legs. We will have him evaluated by the vet on Tuesday...

I know he still looks muddy- but he will have to wait for a little bit warmer day this weekend to really get cleaned up. At least he is now dry with a warm blanket and doesn't have to walk much to get to food and water. We moved him from Little Vacation Village into the Duplex next door with Mendoza. We were going to move him into the barn- but he is so unhappy when he is away from his old friends. This way he is in a drier pen and can still see and touch his herd mates. We will be watching him closely over the weekend.

Over in the Hospice area, Hutch was groomed by volunteer Helga...

Jerome in his corral.

Sharil and her dog Max spent some time with Jerome. Max and Jerome match...

Jimmy Dean refused to go out in the mud, he preferred to nap in Echo Echo's barn stall.
Tanya and Calamity.

The Mare Motel and Hospice horses were turned out.

Hawkeye waited for his pal, Sully, to join him in the turn out...

And then they headed off together to roll in the mud. That's Gentry with them.

Gentry and his best friend, Truce had some fun!

Odds and Ends on a Rainy Day

SHILOH BOARDERS: The vet (Dr. Schur) will be at Shiloh on Tuesday, Feb 2nd. She will be working on some Shiloh horses and then will have time for some Boarders. If you have something that you need to have done, please call Desert Pines directly to add your horse to the list. Desert Pines telephone number is (702) 645-2247.

NOTICE: Shiloh will be closed to visitors and volunteers from Friday, Jan 29th until Monday, February 1st. Thank you!

It is pouring at Shiloh today! Lots of mud and water everywhere.

We are in the process of purchasing and picking up 80 used corral panels for the rescue and Jill, Sally and Tanya picked up the first 25 today in the rain. Not a fun job!

The Big Pasture this morning...

Everyone is wet but it's actually not that cold...

Although everything is wet, all the horses and other animals are doing great.

Arson

Sad news as we did have to have Arson euthanised today at Shiloh.

After a long consultation and weighing any and all options, we decided to let him go peacefully. If it were just the one foot that we were dealing with, there was a small possibility we could save him- but his opposite foot was starting the same breakdown and we just could not let him be in any more pain. He fought so hard and for so long, but it was time for him to be at peace. It was an excruciating decision for all of us, including the vet and all the vet techs from Desert Pines who have helped us care for him over the past year.

Daria and Jimmy Dean spent some quiet time with Arson before the vet arrived. He was fed as much Equine Senior as he wanted and tons of carrots and apples...

Dr Schur examining him.

Both of Arson's front feet were blocked (a nerve block) so that he would have some time pain free. He was sedated and then he was put to sleep with many tears and loving hands easing him on his way. A very difficult morning for all of us at Shiloh.

Arson will be buried at Shiloh near Chief. We always wanted Arson to be able to become a Wanderer and now Chief and Arson are wandering together pain free. I am sure Chief will show him all of the good spots to explore and the soft places to lay...

But, Rescue continues on. Dr Schur re-examined Providence's growths.

And then we had new arrivals, Pippi Longstockings and Vortex checked for pregnancies. BOTH ARE PREGNANT! Pippi (pictured above) is 8 months along...

Vortex is about 6 months along.

Both mares were moved into the Mare Motel and their older babies, Sedona and Sherlock, stayed behind with Fancy in the big Isolation turnout. There was some calling back and forth- but the babies soon settled down to eat. Now both mares can get all of the nutrition they need for their upcoming foals.

This sad and frustrating situation shows you what we have to deal with regarding horse slaughter. All of these horses were heading to slaughter: Both mares pregnant again, weanling babies at their side. Neither babies have ever been handled- why were the mares bred back?! It is absolutely ridiculous and true waste of life!!!!

Gentry- Before and After

It has been one month since Gentry was rescued from slaughter off of the Fallon Feedlot. Look at the change in his face and personality already!

The day after his arrival at Shiloh.
Yesterday!

It's not just their bodies that heal- it's their spirits as well...

Adopted Horse UPDATE- Journey

I love this photo- what a smart horse! :o)

Monday

A beautiful day at Shiloh...

Some sad news as we are now very concerned with Arson's foot. We have been doing everything we can to help him get better, but we might be losing the battle. We are having our vet out tomorrow morning to help us make a decision. We are very afraid that Arson may have to be put down...
Jimmy Dean, Daria and Robin spent time with him today. All of our hearts are breaking...

Jimmy has been keeping him company...

We are going to think positive tonight, but we are prepared to make that difficult decision tomorrow. We do not want Arson to suffer in any way. Please think good thoughts for him...

But, Life goes on...
Truce and Gentry played in the turn out...
Gentry is such a neat horse! Gentry's tail bone (the Dock) has actually been broken so that he carries it in the Saddlebred show fashion. A very archaic and ridiculous tradition...
Truce kicked up his heels...
Jackson was moved back into Little Vacation Village, which made him very, very happy!

Veteran has really filled out!

The Blind Girls' lake.

Lindsey Loham was out strolling today! She is looking great!
